Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare - Draft Review

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is a first-person shooter video game developed by Sledgehammer games and was directed by Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey. The Triple A game was published by Activision and was released on PC, PS4, and Xbox One among other consoles and platforms.

Advanced Warfare is a game that has taken the Call of Duty franchise to new heights from it's modern warfare days and raises the bar for first-person shooters. By departing from what people typically expect from a Call of Duty game, Advanced Warfare takes a major leap from the modern warfare series and steps up the game by taking it into the future. This game does not disappoint in the relentless, action-packed gameplay that has made this series famous. The gunplay and mobility of the game have also been improved making everything feel much more fluid and flexible for the player, making the pacing of the gameplay faster. The game also introduces new mechanics to the franchise with updated weaponry such as exo-suits and rail guns that are powered by electricity and have an unlimited supply of ammunition. All of the new technology and such as vehicles, weapons and uniform equipment fit very well with the new environments and infrastructure of a 2054 United States.

The story for Advanced Warfare's single-player campaign is a major improvement for the Call of Duty series as a whole. By using pre-rendered cinematic cutscenes to progress the games plot and casting professional actors such as Troy Baker and Kevin Spacey to play the main characters (who both give excellent performances) gives legitimacy and depth to the games story and characters, thus making it all the more compelling.

Advanced Warfare's multiplayer mode is not that different from it's previous iterations in the Call of Duty franchise. The core rules of multiplayer still remain the same, with updated environments and scenarios expected to be available with every new game. The new additions to this game however, include players being able to upgrade their score-streaks with different modules that give the player new abilities and effects. The multiplayer mode also allows you to access over 350 different weapons, most of which are not even available in the single-player campaign. The new additions to the multiplayer mode provide new challenges for the player to overcome, helping to extend the games replay value and give the player more content to engage with.

By setting Call of Duty in the future it could have come off as a cheap gimmick that showed a lack of ideas for the franchise. However, Sledgehammer has been able to successfully keep this franchise fresh and new without having to rely on its updated setting. This game manages to make the future setting/environment feel like a brand new addition the the Call of Duty franchise by incorporating it with the narrative and technical elements of your typical Call of Duty gaming, making nothing seem out of place or disconnected from whats happening. Overall, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is an top notch first-person shooter that raises the bar for the genre in every way possible. Whilst it still retains a lot of the core traits of a Call of Duty game it has reinvigorated the franchise and opened up endless possibilities going forward.
